Ready to take your game from the driving range to the golf course?
Build your confidence with lessons from our experienced PGA professionals at Mattishall Golf Club’s golf academy, near Dereham in Norfolk.
Golf lessons for beginners and experienced players
We are lucky enough to have three full time PGA professionals here at Mattishall, so there’s no excuse for not being able to get a lesson to improve that swing, chip or putting technique.
Our PGA professional Matthew Gardner and Assistant Professionals Oli Underhill-Smith and James Wheeler, provide one-to-one coaching to both members and non-members.
Matthew, Oli and James’ golf lessons are ideal for those wanting to brush-up on their golfing techniques as well as those new to the sport wanting to start from scratch.

What you will cover in your golf lessons
As our golf lessons are tailored specifically to the player, what you cover will depend on your experience, goals or any specific issues you’d like to work on.
Our experienced tutors can cover:
- Grip, stance and posture: Learn how to hold the club and set yourself up for a shot.
- Your golf swing: Work on making consistent contact with the ball and improving your direction and distance.
- Chipping and putting: Develop your touch around the green and practise judging pace and distance.
- Choosing your clubs: Understand when to use different clubs and how they can help you play different shots.
- Playing on the course: Put your practice into action with on-course tuition, building confidence in choosing and playing your shots.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a member to book golf lessons?
No, our golf lessons are available to both members and non-members.
What equipment do I need to bring?
Just bring your clubs and your golfing shoes. Golf balls and any specialist training equipment will be provided during your lesson.
How much experience do I need?
None at all – learning with a golf coach from the start with guidance from experienced players can help you build confidence, learn the basics and develop good habits from the start.
Our PGA professionals work with golfers of all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced players looking to improve their game.
Is 30 minutes enough for a golf lesson?
A 30-minute lesson can be enough to focus on a specific part of your game, such as improving your putting or addressing a particular issue with your swing.
Beginner players may benefit from taking longer and/or a series of lessons to get the most value from them.
How many golf lessons should a beginner take?
There’s no fixed number. It depends on your previous experience, confidence and personal goals, as well as how much you practise between lessons.
For beginners, we recommend a block of lessons to build a foundation in using different clubs, developing your swing and improving your short game. Our PGA professionals can help you decide where to start.
We currently offer six lessons for the price of five.
